Cycling to Work

0

I been trying to cycle to work from home and back. I work a couple of days a week from home, but when I work in the office, I cycle. Well, I cycle when it is warm and not raining. What a weird summer, It is June 2, and we have not had a single hot day. I do not think we broke the 90′s yet. However, the wind is working.

This morning, I changed my cyclemeter stopwatch (main page) to have time from best ride. Knowing that information, I was able to push harder and got to work with my fastest time of 40:39, with the normal distance of 11.28 miles with an average speed of 16.65 mph. Mornings are generally slow for me, because I am not really awake. I jump out of bed and get on the bike pretty quickly.

Some information:
Miles for 2011 so far, 1098
Miles for May 2011, 316.33

Goals:
Miles for 2011 – 3,000
Miles for June 2011, 450
Miles for July 2011, 600

Walking and lack of Fitness

0

Yesterday, I got and did a little exercise. I did 24,000 steps which includes my cycling of 22 miles. Today, I am a little sore. The wife and I went out this morning for a light walk/run. That hurt. I am so out of shape, it is embarrassing.

Two becomes one

Most of you have not noticed that I had two blogs, one for fitness and one for everything else. I decided to merge the two together. Middle-aged man will now contain both fitness and how I see the world items. My blog is very light on posting so it makes sense.

12 Days of Fitness (Day 3)

0

I walked at work and then went to church ( I work with the Freshmen guys) and when I got home at 9:00pm, I knew I had to run.  So I stretched and got on the treadmill and did 1/4 mile walk warmup followed by a run for 2.0 miles total. It started at 6.0 mph pace for the first mile and 6.2 for the next 7/8 of mile and finished the last 1/8 mile at 7.0 mph. I felt pretty good, I am always concern my calf will crap out on me. The key to running on the treadmill is to cover up the display. I stare at it all the time, making the run seem longer.

12 Days of Fitness (Day 1)

0

After returning from a business trip in Orlando, Florida this last week, without a doubt I need to recommit to some level of fitness. I talked to one really nice lady, named Carol Hess, who happens to run. She has fun running marathons and has been running for a few decades. She really inspired me to get back on “track”. What inspired me was her story about over coming cancer. She is a true over comer, and I was impressed.

I want to pattern my fitness after the saying of “12 Days of Christmas Fitness”. Starting tonight December 8th. This does not line up with the actual 12 Days of Christmas, but I feel motivated and did not want to wait.

Each day, I want to commit to doing my walking (1-1/2 hours to 2 hours), followed up by at least 1/2 hour of more strenuous exercise. For example, running a minimum of two miles, swimming, cycling on the trainer (too cold to ride outside and at night). Stair climbing, such as at work, we have 16 flights of stairs in the corner of our building. When I was in better shape that would whip me good, running up those babies.

Tonight, I ran two miles on the treadmill doing it in 19:45 minutes. Because of my bad calf (today, it did not hurt), I like the consistency of the treadmill, plus it does have less impact on this old frame.

Today, my steps are over 23,700. I place my steps on my activity calendar, if you would like to it check it out.

Run Around the House

I wanted to run in this weekend’s for the Toys-for-tots 5K run at Lancaster City Park, but after tonight’s run, I hurt my right calf again. I was not running that hard and I do not know why it starting complaining at about the distance of 1.5 miles. I finished the run, and then walked three miles with my dog (it had no real pain). Later in the evening the calf was sore and tight. So, it is best to give this stupid muscle some rest. Here is my motionbase information.

Tonight’s Run (8:58 pace)

0

Tonight marks the first time that I ran under a nine minute mile. I ran tonight at a 8:58 pace, beating my last run by two seconds. I felt I was running faster and I expected to beat my time by 10 seconds, because I felt that good. Or at least contrasting how I felt from Sunday’s run, which was really hard on me. Tonight I was not that labored. However, it all felt good because it was at night and 70 degrees. I eat an hour before the run, stretched well. My left knee hurt just prior to starting, but no real pain when I ran. Normally, a lot things hurt prior to running, it is my body telling me that it does not want to do this stuff.

Today’s Run

0

Today, being Sunday morning and it is my slowest day of the week, I wanted to get out and run. I have not run since last Tuesday night. I was going to run my normal two miles from my street up to Avenue H back past my street to Starbucks.

Today, I was so not motivated to run, I still feel very tired. But, I started at 7:30am with some treadmill work, to warm up, followed by some stretching. I got out and ran at 8:00 am. The run was very hard on me. I wanted to stop but having my GPS on keeps me going. The results on the GPS makes it hard to stop. I did stop to walk twice (believe it or not) for a short moment, but the guilt was too much and I started running again.

I figured today would be a terrible day to record, but I ran hard and my breathing was labored. I guessed that my pace would be between 9:15 and 9:30, but to my surprise it was 9:00 exactly. I was running fast and that is why I was so labored. Today’s result’s is the fastest to date. Here is my motionbased results.

Ride – 29 Miles

0

Clay Patten and I talked about riding together, and we want to do the AV Fall Century in October. Clay is a machine. He is very very fit, while I am a guy with some form of fitness that is clearly really different than Clay’s.

For the ride, I met Clay at his house and rode to Munz Ranch road, over to Lake Elizabeth road, and over Godde hill back to his house.

This was the first time I rode up Godde. Clay being the fit machine, actually push me up some of the 1.2 miles of hill. Man, I feel so not fit around him. I will confess, that I was not ready for the ride. I did not feel well, my stomach and head were not in the game. With all of the hours at work and things going on, I was emotionally tired, which relates to being physically tired. The heat (over 100 degrees) did not help, nor not eating (stomach was a mess) prior to the ride.

Overall the ride was fun, It was an average of 13.9 pace. It should have been in the 15-17 pace, but we will try again next week?

Run – Avenue H

0

Tonight I wanted again to run from the house to Avenue H. I ran this path last Saturday and Sunday. Teri wanted to run at Joe Walker Middle School. I am not a big fan of running in circles. I won out, we will run done the street. I eat 1-1/2 hour before and we set out around 9:00pm. I warmed up on the treadmill and did some stretching. Teri did not want to run by herself. She does not like me running in front of her. So, I gave her a four minute head start. I set my timer on my watch and turned on the GPS and started to run. I felt pretty good and I did not pass Teri but finished behind her by about 100 feet. So the four minute head start is about right.

I ran at 9:04 pace, my best ever on this route. I am still looking to beat the nine minute pace.
