Being an middle aged man, it is important to have annual physicals. This last year, I switched medical groups and set a baseline for my physical data. I usually get an annual physical because, bad news does not get better with time. If there is something wrong, I want the most time to deal with it. Igroning problems is never smart.

Weight Loss

0

Once a week I measure my weight. My goal is to lose two pounds a week from sensible eating and more activity. I did a lot of activity this last week, two six mile hikes, and started the stair stepper, bleacher climbing and greater distance then the five mile daily walks. My youngest daughter Hannah celebrated her 12 birthday, and at her party, we had pizza. I eat on Saturday 3 slices (500 Calories each), and two on Sunday (leftovers). I believe my results would have been better if I did not have the pizza.

I decided to look at my Body Mass Index (BMI), using an on-line BMI calculator, such as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I entered my height and weight, bingo- I am “obese“, wow what an ugly word, obese! I have an index of 33. Anything above 30 is that ugly word. I am 217 pounds, when I get down to 180 lbs (that is 37 more pounds to lose), the index has me as only over weight. Only when I obtain the weight of 160 pounds does the index have me as “normal”. I am encouraged!

This is the second hike in two days. This time by myself and the dog. We left early on Sunday and was on the trail by 6:00 am. The hike starts out at 3,650 feet and tops out at the antenna station at 4,600 ft. The actual mileage is 5.35 miles. Motionbased results

Hike – Grass Mountain

Today, I asked my wife Teri to make the hike up Grass Mountain in Leona Valley (1/2 hour from the house). It was a very good hike. Round trip was around six miles. My stupid Garmin battery died, so I do not any GPS data for this hike. I did take my camera and made this presentation. You can see pictures of my dog with his pack and the wife.

Blood Pressure

One of the items that I check regularly is my blood pressure. I have been visiting our nurses at work on a regular basis to have my pressure checked. When I had my physical this last August, my doctor wanted to medicate me, at the time it was around 148/89. I did not want to do that. It was the last few days of classes for my BSSE. I asked to retest in 2-3 weeks. When I retested I was below the 140 mark, so I did not need to medicate.

Shin Splints

On of the issues with my legs is shin splints. I get sharp pain 75% of the time on my left shin. They start in the first 1/2 mile and will continue up to mile 2 to 2-1/2. I thought that it has to do with support in the shoes. I have some good shoes like my running and hiking, and some bad shoes, like my work shoes. The shoe does not seem to matter. I have added support with no help. The more I walk, it does
