Water in the Ear

0

After each swim (‘taw’-date, it has been three sessions), I get water in the ear. I went to Sports Chalet and picked up some ear plugs, hoping I can stop this. I should have picked up a nose plug too. Won’t that look pretty?

As an old guy, I feel that I need to plug my ears and nose. Oh, and by the way, I purchased a new suit. The old one was is too big, from being 40 pounds heavier. I can hardly keep it on my butt. It wants to come off, so when I swim, I have to keep pulling it up.

I feel I take in water in my nose, even though I exhale in the water through my nose and inhale with my mouth. I just feel that I am taking in water. Also, even after I shower after the swim, but feel the chlorine never leaves me. I am not sure, if anyone around me can tell I am been in a pool, but I feel like I smell like chlorine. I think it is just me, due to me getting water in my lungs, stomach, ears, nose, throat and well whatever is left.

Swimming 30 laps

Today the open swimming time was 11:45 to 1:15pm. I made it to the pool. There were a lot of folks. Each lane had two swimmers minimum. I had to wait for 15 minutes to get a lane. One lady told me she would finish in about 5 minutes and I could have her lane. She looked like an experienced swimmer. She was doing flip turns.

She finished and I got in the water. I did my first lap and  thanked her for the lane. I told her I wanted to learn to do the flip turn. She mentioned, when you get an arm’s distance from the edge, make the flip. It will come naturally, but you will breath some water at first, until you get comfortable with it. I have not yet tryed it. I want to do it in the shallow end, so I can stand up when it goes bad. Today the crowds would not let me swim in the shallow end. I may try this Monday night.

I did 30 laps (36 being a half mile, a goal in my little mind). I do stop after two to four laps to allow my breathing and heart to settle down. I do mostly the breast stroke. I did three laps of free style and two laps of side stroke. Maybe on Monday I will try a back stroke.

At the pool I saw one of the home-school families there. It was Kathy Smith and three of her kids. I think they have 12 kids, but I am not sure. The three there were the youngest, and they were doing school work while mom swam. Kathy is a swimmer. She swan in college and it shows. She glides through the water.

Swimming Laps (24)

Not much of anything exciting here. I managed to go to the pool last night. It is open between 8:30-9:30pm and I got in 24 laps. I started with two laps of free style, my least favorite and did the breast stroke. I also did two side-stroke laps. Overall it was fine. It was raining outside, but the roof is open and it would drop some rain in the pool. I liked it.

When the city starts some new swimming classes, I plan to attend. It is evident that I am not a good swimmer. Time to get stronger and better at those strokes.

Teri and I went the pool last night between 8:30 and 9:30 pm, during the open swim period. This is the first time for me in this pool. Teri has taken some water aquatics classes last summer here. Our girls have had swimming lessons here as well.

After work I went to Sports Chalet and purchased some goggles.

Nervous that the pool would be cold, but it was just the opposite, it was quite pleasant. Teri stated talking to a lady whom she knows from our old church Central Christian. After my swim I talked to both of them, they are Nina and Greg. They had dinner the night before with Chuck and Juanita who own Gil’s Bike shop. What a small world.

I did 20 laps. Teri is a better swimmer and did 22 laps. My laps were 4 free style and 4 side stroke, and the rest breast stroke. I did not like the free style, that is a stroke I really need to improve on.

As well, I have some water in the ear, so it is true; with every activity I have to have something not go right. (grin).

Because my hip is a mess, I need another activity that will not add to my sorrows. I decided that swimming would be great. I did not want to start swimming due that we are in the winter. In Lancaster, there are a couple of public pools. The one that is open year round is the Eastside Pool. It has open swim times at:

  • Saturday 1:30-2:30 pm
  • Mon-Fri 5:45-7 am
  • 11:45-1 pm
  • M/W/F 8:30-9:30 pm

I guess I will find out, if the pool is heated (I am thinking that it is not, brrrr). The fees seem OK, $1.75 ($1.50, if I buy a 30 punch swim pass). Anyways, maybe you will see me there.
