Middle-Aged
0I just received this book, How to Climb Mount Whitney in One Day, For Middle-Aged, Weekend and Amateur Day Hikers, by Sharon Baker-Salony; http://www.mtwhitneyoneday.com/. I expected more fitness information. It mostly covered each part of the hike.
Altitude
0Altitude! I am starting to add altitude. Most of the five to nine miles a day are around the house. http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/2696346
Yesterday, Teri and I set out to go to Antelope Valley College to use the bleachers and track. We met the Patton’s, really good friends. Clayton is a physical therapist and is very fit. He uses the track to keep fit and be accountable to the running group. He wife Tanya and their son Zach were also there.
I ran up and walked down the bleachers. I total of 15 sets. This is the first time doing so. It was not great progress but a start. We walked laps. Teri got in her miles. (four laps = one mile). I did some jogging. I am still too heavy to really jog or run. But it felt good.
I finished and went home to have dinner. I also, did three more miles after dinner with the dog. Total six miles or walking, and bleacher climbing.
Dog
0My dog Chip is loving the walking. When I walk at home I have to take the dog. He walks so much more than I. He goes forward, walks back to me, then forward. With my Adventure Pass, we will now have weekend training on the trails. I just purchased a trail pack for Chip from www.ebag.com . He can carry his water and supplies. I placed it on him in the kitchen, and he is not sure about it. Once we start the walking, he will not notice it.
Adventure Pass
0To park and climb in the local Angeles forest an Adventure Pass is required. I set out to purchase a one year pass. It is $30, I checked on-line and went to Big-5, nope sold the last one earlier. Off to Sport’s Chalet, nope just sold the last one. Both places stated the Wal-Mart sold them. I dropped off Hannah at gymnastics and header over to Wal-Mart, nope. They stated try the one at 25 E and J, went there; guess what they are out as well.
It became an adventure to get the Adventure Pass. Frustrated, I called the Forest service and order one. I also got the second car one for an additional $5.
Socks
0The hiking books that I have been reading state, do not wear cotton. Cotton holds on to sweat and when reaching the summit, the sweat will get cold. Coldness can lead to stiffing of the legs. It is not uncommon to have lighting and rain storms. It may be rain, and at 14,000 feet, hypothermia is possible. I purchased some socks that are a synthetic wool. Boy are they comfortable. I also purchase a very thin (silk like) to wear underneath.
Camelbak
0More equipment. I looked for large container to carry water. The Camelbak has a few, the largest being 100 ounces. I wanted larger, knowing I like to drink the hike is about 16 hours or so. I will need to carry other liquids, like some sports drink or filtration.
Shoes
0The most important piece of equipment is shoes or hiking boots. I went to Sport’s Chalet and took note of the boots. I noticed they carried Merell, so came home and goggled for
