New Goal (update)
I was talking to Tracy and Mark at work about the amount of miles we are walking when it dawned on me that the sum of the miles could be the virtual distance of walking across America. We are all tracking our steps on WalkerTracker.com and in about of a month of tracking my walking I am about 238 miles. That is the distance from Santa Monica Pier to Blythe (the California border).
To walk across America, I am starting in Santa Monica Pier and ending at Jacksonville Florida. Tracy is walking as a crow flies, but being the geek that I am, I using Google maps. It a distance of 2,429 miles and my goal is 16,000 steps a day or about 8 miles a day. Wow.
To date using WalkerTracker, I have walked about 237 miles in 32 days. So, this is how it looks. I will update the map monthly.
I love the map that you included to show how far you have walked. That is a crazy amount of miles you have logged in less than a month. 8 miles will be a high average, but you have proven yourself a worthy competitor in the step logging world. Your enthusiasm to push the envelope and reach higher encourages me to increase my steps and activity. Keep up the good work!
Thank you. I want to make a change. I decided that I do not want to go to New York. I want to go to Jacksonville, so I will change the map. I found a better way to do the map. I should use driving directions and enter, “Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, CA” and an ending place, for example, Las Vegas. It responded with 286 miles or so. I know I have done 200 miles, so I then pick some city closer to my miles. This way I do not have to click each road.
Hi Doug,
I see that I can now comment, I tried to tell you a while ago but you said ‘just hit the comment button’
I said I did and nothing happened.
Great job on walking across America it is a great land. Dean Karnazes is coming out with another book in August about his 50/50. check the link to Karl’s blog on my site, we just saw the documentary on it. It will motivate you!
Can I have my book back, Ultramarathon Man?
Hey! I was thinking that if you did start a walk across America challenge in Walkertracker.com that it would be great to show a map of our group travels. Although some may walk more then 16,000 steps on days we can just have 16,000 be the minimum we should aim for. I hope you will consider because it would be a fun group fitness effort.
